This May marks what would have been the 122th birthday of Martha Graham (May 11, 1894 – April 1, 1991). She spent her life challenging what dance is and what a dancer can do. Quoting wikipedia:..." her influence has been compared with the influence of Picasso on modern visual arts, the influence of Stravinsky on music and the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright on architecture."

The angular motions of torso, head and arms shape the jersey costume into squares, triangles and rhomboids.
Graham said of the costume, "I wear a long tube of material to indicate the tragedy that obsesses the body, the ability to stretch inside your own skin ... ".
